    The College Recruiting Process

A very informative article on the college recruiting process was published yesterday on the Inside Lacrosse Blog. It was written by Tom Kovic, a former D1 coach and the current director of Victory Collegiate Consulting, and includes very useful advise for the student-athlete.

Recruiting: Official visits and the early decision period

The official visit is a great way to narrow down your college choices by spending quality time with the coaching staff, current student-athletes and college administrators. These visits differ from the unofficial visit in cost, time limitations and the total number permitted by the prospect and the number of visits to each individual institution. That being said, making the effort to work with college coaches to arrange the official visit will provide the prospect and family with a “good look under the hood” as you potentially head down the homestretch in the college search.

    Communication

As prospects begin to “get their ducks in a row” during the final stages of the college search, communication skills should be sharpened and effectively exercised on a regular basis. I encourage prospects to fine tune their approach and prioritize the “A” list of potential college choices. College coaches are taking similar steps in preparing their recruiting strategies and will look strongly at those prospects that are focused, organized and committed, as compared to those prospects that seem to be lagging behind

In my opinion, this is an article every high school student considering a college athletics career should read prior to initiating contact with coaches. It’s a good brief on how to handle the process and benefit to the fullest extent.

For those all-star players who’ve been catered to their entire athletic careers, getting recruited might be no sweat. Coaches call them, right? But for the typical “blue-collar” player getting recruited can be a long strategic process. I know that first-hand. It can be tough at times, even demoralizing.

When you do make contact, you’ve got to be on point. Often times it’s up to you to keep conversations going and continually asking for attention isn’t always enough. People like Tim Kovic are there to help, but recruiting services can cost a lot of dough. If your (or your parents’) bank account can’t afford them then the next best thing is to read articles like these.

Get a grasp on the process and what it’ll take to make a positive first impression. Often times you only get one chance to get your foot in the door and once you’re in, you’re not guaranteed a thing. If you’re not the all-star and you want to go big, you’ve got to be professional, persistent and always carry positive vibes.
